Neighbourhood Renewal

An important new source of funding available over the next two years is called Neighbourhood Renewal. It also has associated funds such as the Community Empowerment Fund. The purpose of Neighbourhood Renewal is to make a difference to the way that services are delivered and to improve the quality of life of people living with disadvantage. It is part of a national initiative that has brought over 22 million from central government to Bradford. About 5 million of this was available to the District in year one (2001/2), administered by Bradford Council. Year two and Three (2002 to 2004) of the funding will be administered by Bradford Vision.

The story so far...

In year one 2.45 million of Neighbourhood Renewal funding was distributed by the Council's Community Area Panels, using both grants and commissions. The closing date for Year One Neighbourhood Renewal grant applications was December 14th 2001. Projects that were funded through Area Panel funding in year 1 (2001) are of two kinds:

Firstly there are those that directly improve the way services are delivered. Second there are those involving preparatory work within communities to achieve neighbourhood renewal objectives in the longer term.

Years Two and Three of Neighbourhood Renewal is being led by Bradford Vision, the Local Strategic Partnership for the District. Last year (2002) Bradford Vision consulted widely on a new Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy which now forms the basis for the use of the remaining Neighbourhood Renewal Funding (a copy can be obtained by logging on to: www.bradfordvision.com)

From January 2002 Bradford Vision has been using the Government's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to support Neighbourhood Action Planning. Neighbourhood Action Planning brings together everyone who cares about a neighbourhood to agree what needs to be done, and who is going to do it. Communities of interest may also face many serious problems, and they can use a similar approach. Action Planning Payments will help the worst-off neighbourhoods and communities:

Up to 5,000 for each neighbourhood or community of interest to bring people together and draw up a plan.

Up to 20,000 for each neighbourhood or community of interest to carry out the plan.
