Philanthropy

Apart from charitable trusts and companies there are a lot of other bodies that it might be worth approaching. It depends on who you are, who you know, and what you're trying to do.

Think about:

Rotary, Lions, Round Table and similar groups
Women's groups - Townswomen's Guild, Housewife's Register, WI
Trades Unions and Trades Clubs
Chamber of Commerce
Student Union
Religious bodies
Works' Social Clubs
Pubs and clubs

Your Local Infrastructure Organisation (LIO i.e. Council for Voluntary Service, Voluntary Action, Community Action) should be able to help with some names and addresses. To contact your local LIO go to the NAVCA website www.navca.org.uk to find their details. Otherwise use the phone book and your local reference library. There are directories of all sorts that may be relevant.

Individual Philanthropists

Most trusts and foundations were set up by individual philanthropists. Some individuals are
prepared to make charitable donations on a personal basis.

There are others who have grouped together to organise their charitable donations. These
groups are often not open to applications but prefer to work by personal contact. It is worth
becoming known to these groups.

Other things you can do to find out which organisations and individuals that might be worth
approaching:

Look at other groups' annual reports to see who supports them

Look at the local newspaper to see who is in the photographs handing over the cheques.
