Monday 13th September 2010 Advising Groups on Funding Issues - On-line course

fit4funding is offering their innovative online course for funding advisers. This course is the online translation of fit4funding's face to face OCN accredited course for giving Funding Advice. It is aimed at individuals whose work involves advising community and voluntary groups on funding and funding related issues. For example; specialist funding advisors, community or umbrella agency workers whose remit includes giving funding advice, or people new to giving funding advice.

Fit4funding has successfully delivered this Open College Network level 3 accredited course to learners face to face for over 8 years, training well over 1000 funding advisors in England and Wales. This version of the course will be delivered completely on-line with two very experienced and fully qualified f4f funding advice e-learning tutors, who will offer individual support and guidance throughout.

The courses run over an 8 week period and requires learners to commit to approx 4 hours participation per week. Learners can work at their own pace and in their own time, and will engage in a range of inter-active experiences and networking opportunities with other learners.

The course will cover:

  • The role of the funding advisor
  • Good practice in giving funding advice
  • Diagnosing groups' needs
  • Clarifying complex funding criteria
  • Giving feedback on draft applications
  • Voluntary sector funding trends

Course start date: 13th September for 8 weeks
Enrolment date: 8th September 2010

Course cost - £250 for voluntary and community sector organisations. 
£350 for statutory organisations

Monday 13th September 2010 Community Cascade - First Step to Sustainability - E-learning training

This on-line course is being offered for free through Community Cascade, a Big lottery funded project which is aimed at community centres and community networks.

This on-line course will look at a diverse range of funding sources from grants to contracts, from individual giving to trading and considers the pro's and cons of each. It also looks at how groups can effectively plan to become more sustainable.

The session is aimed at groups who presently mainly rely on grant funding.

The course has been designed so that participants can access the materials and complete the work in their own time, providing flexibility to busy workers.

Participants must have access to a computer and the internet and will need to commit a total of 4 hours over two weeks (2 hours per week)

Tuesday 21st September 2010 Applying for Small Grants - Wakefield

Half day workshop 

This session will help voluntary and community groups to make successful funding applications to run activities and projects. It will particularly look at applying to charitable trusts or small funding pots such as Awards for All (lottery funding), BBC Children in Need and local government grant pots. It will cover how to answer key questions which funders say groups fail on, such as identifying the need for your project, what you will do, who will benefit and how (outcomes) and community involvement.

Wednesday 29th September 2010 6 Steps to Developing Fundraising Skills - Leeds - Step 1

Six half-day sessions


Aimed at people from Voluntary and Community groups new to fundraising the course covers everything you need know in order to plan your fundraising and develop your skills in making good funding applications. We will cover planning projects, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation, identifying funding, making applications and fundraising planning. You can also go for an Open College Network qualification at level 2 or 3 if you wish.

 

Step 1 - Packaging Projects for Bids (29/09/10)
This session will help you to plan and present appropriate projects and activities to attract funding, the session will cover:

  • Checking that the organisation carrying out the project is ready for funding
  • Prioritising and outlining appropriate projects and activities
  • Key considerations when planning projects (e.g. need, outcomes, equal opportunities, user involvement)
  • Putting your project across to funders effectively


Step 2 - Budgets for Bids (6/10/10)
To help you budget for your project/activities the session will cover:

  • Identifying resources needed to deliver your project
  • Estimating costs
  • Preparing a budget for a funding application
  • Common budgeting mistakes and how to avoid them


Step 3 - Finding Funding (13/10/10)
To help you identify appropriate funders for your projects, this session will cover:

  • Types of funding, from grants to income generation
  • Researching appropriate funders
  • Getting the right funder for your project


Step 4 - How to Make a Successful Funding Application (20/10/10)
To help you complete successful funding bids, the session will cover:

  • What to include in a bid and how to present it
  • Why some bids succeed where others fail
  • Drafting bids, looking at key questions and presentation


Step 5 - Measuring Success (03/11/10)
To help you plan to show what you have achieved and will cover:

  • How to monitor the progress of your project
  • How to prove your success 
  • Sorting out the jargon - outputs, outcomes, long term change etc
  • Planning monitoring & evaluation systems for funding bids


Step 6 - Developing a Funding Strategy (10/11/10)
To help you plan your fundraising effectively and sustain your organisation, the session will cover:

Developing a fundraising strategy - how and what to include

Planning strategically - looking at opportunities and threats

Knowing what's going on - national and local strategies

Developing your group's fundraising skills

Procurement and commissioning are rapidly becoming a preferred way of funding the voluntary
sector for many large funders. This session will give groups an overview with details on how
purchasers (funders) work in practice. The session often includes the participation of a local
purchaser, such as a local authority.

  • What are the pros and cons?
  • How does it work in practice?

Wednesday 27th October 2010 Monitoring and Evaluation - Wakefield

Full day workshop

This workshop is intended to help you understand the purpose of and need for monitoring and evaluation. It will introduce terminology and scaleable research techniques you can use to assess the impact of your project or organisation.

Using case studies, you will be able to identify appropriate methodologies for successful in-house evaluation and to understand more complex evaluation frameworks undertaken for larger programmes.

Wednesday 2nd March 2011 Funding for Community Projects - (OCN Accredited 10 hour unit) - Calderdale

How to access funding for community and voluntary sector projects, specifically:

  • The key elements of a funding strategy
  • The advantages and disadvantages of different types of funding
  • What makes a good funding application
  • The support and advice on funding available to voluntary and community groups

Participants can achieve one 10-hour credit at level 3 by completing two worksheets (2 sides of A4 each). There will be time to make notes on these in the sessions, but participants are expected to take (on average) two hours to reflect on what they have learnt, type up their answers and e-mail or post them to the tutor.

Sessions are run by fit4funding itself, or in partnership with other organisations in West Yorkshire.  Bookings should be made with the organisation indicated in the course description.

If the course description indicates that you should book with fit4funding, please complete the booking form and return with any course fees due.  If you are unable to send a cheque without first receiving an invoice, please indicate this on the booking form. The invoice will be raised prior to the course start date.

Cancellation Policy for courses booked directly with fit4funding

Cancellations are only accepted in writing (letter, e-mail, fax).

Whether payment has been received or not, charges will be made according to the following periods of notice:

  • 21 days notice 10% administration charge (subject to a £5 minimum)
  • 14 days notice 50% course fees
  • 7 days notice or less 100% course fees

Refunds will only be made in exceptional circumstances and then only at the discretion of the manager.

Deferrals

If you are unable to complete the course within the stated dates and you request to defer to the next run of the course then you will be required to pay an additional 50% of the course costs before you re-commence your studies.

Data Protection

fit4funding will use the information you provide on your booking form for administering our training courses.  The details you are asked to give about your group will be used for our monitoring and to ensure we are reaching our target audience.  fit4funding may share this information with Partner agencies (including funding agencies) where this is necessary and consistent with the purposes stated above.
